The Cairo Criminal Court (Second Terrorism Circuit) decided today to postpone the trial of Dr. Ahmed El-Tohamy, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Alexandria University, in Case No. 579 of 2025, Fifth Settlement Felonies, to June 23, 2026, in order to hear the second and third prosecution witnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today’s session included the testimony and questioning of the first prosecution witness, the investigating officer, but the court ended the session before the defense could complete their examination, prompting objections from the defense team.<\/span><\/p>\n

El-Tohamy had previously requested the court\u2019s permission to submit books and research in his field to prepare the required studies for his academic promotion to full professorship, in addition to requesting the questioning of prosecution witnesses in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

Security forces arrested El-Tohamy on June 3, 2020, and he remained forcibly disappeared at a State Security location in Cairo for 17 days before being presented to the prosecution, which charged him with joining a terrorist group, publishing and disseminating false news and statements, and misuse of social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

7 February 2026 : Al-Tohamy\u2019s Trial Adjourned to March, Defense Requests to Introduce Academic Books and Research<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Cairo Criminal Court (Second Terrorism Circuit) has adjourned the trial of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tohamy, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Alexandria University, in Case No. 579 of 2025, Fifth Settlement Felonies, to 11 March 2026. The adjournment was to hear and examine prosecution witnesses, in response to a request from the defense team.<\/span><\/p>\n

During today\u2019s session, the prosecution read the referral order against the defendants, all of whom denied the charges against them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Al-Tohamy\u2019s defense requested the court to allow him to introduce books and academic research in his field of specialization, to enable him to prepare the research required for his promotion to full professorship, in addition to requesting the hearing and examination of prosecution witnesses in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

The court had previously adjourned the case on 17 December 2025 to 7 February 2026, due to difficulties in transporting Al-Tohamy from detention to the court.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is noted that security forces arrested Al-Tohamy on 3 June 2020, and he was held in enforced disappearance at a National Security facility in Cairo for 17 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

The prosecution\u2019s investigation focused on allegations that he had collaborated with Egyptian activist Mohamed Soltan, residing in the United States, in a lawsuit filed against former Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawy, a claim denied by Al-Tohamy, who asserted that the security targeting was due to his academic research on the Arab Spring revolutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Criminal Court (Second Terrorism Circuit) adjourned the session of Dr. Ahmed El-Tohamy<\/i>, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic and Political Studies, Alexandria University, in Case No. 579 of 2025, Fifth Settlement Felonies to 7 February 2026, due to the inability to transfer him from his detention to the court premises.<\/p>\n

El-Tahami was arrested on 3 June 2020 and was forcibly disappeared at a National Security facility in Cairo for 17 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

13 January 2025<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Supreme State Security Prosecution has referred Ahmed Al-Tohamy, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, to criminal court on charges of leading a terrorist organization and participating in a criminal conspiracy aimed at committing a terrorist act. The court has not yet set a date or assigned a judicial circuit for the first hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

On December 10, 2024, the Criminal Court (Second Terrorism Circuit) extended Al-Tohamy\u2019s detention for 45 days pending investigations in Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Tohamy was arrested on June 3, 2020, and subjected to enforced disappearance for 17 days at a National Security Agency facility in Cairo. The Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

The decision came despite the interruption in the broadcast of his remote trial session, as he was presented via video conference from the Badr Rehabilitation and Correctional Center 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Criminal Court (First Circuit) renewed the detention of academic Ahmed Altohamy for 45 extra days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), in which Altohamy has been detained for more than three years against accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who is residing in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy.<\/p>\n

Security forces arrested the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University on June 3, 2020. Altohamy went on a hunger strike that lasted several weeks in protest against his continued detention, although he didn\u2019t commit any crime.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Al-Tohamy started a hunger strike this month; in protest of his continued pretrial detention of three years without committing a crime, AFTE filed a report to the Public Prosecutor\u2019s office that carried No. 32276 of 2023; To open an urgent investigation into the incident of his hunger strike to transfer him to the prison hospital to receive medical treatment, and releasing him under any guarantee.<\/p>\n

Today, AFTE submitted a report to the attorney general that is bearing No. 32276 of 2023; To open an urgent investigation into the incident of the hunger strike of the Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed AlTohamy, which began on June 3, to transfer him to the prison hospital to receive medical treatment, and releasing him under any guarantee.<\/span><\/p>\n

AlTohamy informed his family of his start in a total hunger strike in protest of his continued pretrial detention of three years without committing a crime, despite the code of criminal procedures stipulating that the maximum period of pretrial detention is two years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On October 30, the Criminal Court (3rd Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed Al-Tohamy Abdel Hay, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Tohamy was listed in that case against accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who is residing in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy, which AlTohamy has denied before the investigating authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

After his arrest on June 3, 2020, the investigating authorities charged Al-Tohamy with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Tohamy was arrested on June 3, 2020; he was subjected to enforced disappearance at national security headquarter in Cairo for 17 days until he was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on June 20, which decided to detain him pending the current case on charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.<\/p>\n

On Monday, 28 March, The Criminal Court (The Third Circuit Terrorism) decided to renew the detention of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tohamy for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).<\/p>\n

On June 3, 2020, Al-Tohamy was arrested, later on June 20, he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution in connection with the current case, which charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.<\/p>\n

Cairo Criminal Court \u201cThe Third Circuit Terrorism\u201d considered the detention order of Dr.\u201d Ahmed Al-Tohamy AbdelHay\u201d, and ordered to renew his detention for 45 extra days, this came pending Case No. 649 of 2020 Supreme State Security, The mentioned court considered the order to renew the defendant detention on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, in the presence of AFTE\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n

Dr. \u201cAhmed AlTohamy\u201d was arrested on June 3, 2020, and forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters until he was brought before the Public Prosecution Office on June 20 of the same year, until the prosecution decided to include him pending the mentioned case, and his detention is still pending renewal till now.<\/p>\n

The investigations charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing a social media website.<\/p>\n
