On 11 June 2020, a police force arrested Zomoroda and her mother from an apartment in Cairo\u2019s Heliopolis, under an arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecution. This came after the Monitoring and Analysis Unit at the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office observed anger on social media, and after the Public Prosecution received several lawsuits, on top of which is the one filed by lawyer Ashraf Farahat, which carried No. 36 of 2020.<\/p>\n
The Public Prosecution charged her with practicing paid prostitution, arranging sexual encounters between her and several men with the help of her mother. She also faced charges of infringing on family values and principles, posting indecent pictures and videos with the purpose of distribution and display, and creating personal accounts on the internet with the aim of committing these crimes.<\/p>\n
On 29 July 2020, the Public Prosecution referred Zomoroda and her mother to the Economic Court, which on 30 September sentenced them to six years in prison and ordered each to pay a fine of 100,000 pounds. The court also ordered police supervision of them for a period of 3 years.<\/p>\n
On 14 March 2021, the court of appeal set 9 May 2021 for deciding on the appeal submitted by the defendants’ lawyer. Then, the session was adjourned to 13 June.<\/p>\n
On June 13, 2021, the appeals circuit at the Cairo Economic Court, reduced the sentence of Zomorroda and her mother to 5 years, which also fined them 1000,000 LE.<\/p>\n
Last Wednesday, the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression, in cooperation with Ahmed Ragheb Firm for Law and Legal Consultation, filed a memorandum of reasons for appealing the negative ruling issued by the Cairo Economic Court in Case No. 370 of 2020 registered with No. 535 of 2020 at the Economic Court against Sherifa Refaat Abdel Muttalib, known as “Sherry Hanem,” and her daughter Nora Hesham Ahmed, known as “Zomoroda.”<\/p>\n
