During the previous month (September), the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) monitored the state and problems of freedom of thought and expression in Egypt. Through its various units’ activities, AFTE issued papers and statements that take a deeper look at some of the issues of freedom of thought and expression currently raised and provided legal aid in cases related to freedom of thoughts and expression.<\/p>\n

1. Publications:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

AFTE issued the third paper of The Internet and the Law in Egypt Series, titled “Digital Privacy<\/a>,” in which it addresses the issue of digital privacy and its importance in the context of the increasing use of technology and artificial intelligence in daily life. And laws affecting users’ right to privacy, such as telecommunication Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003 and Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Within the efforts of the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression to release imprisoned human rights defenders in Egypt, AFTE launched the #FreeHumanRightsDefenders campaign, which will continue till next month. In September, AFTE issued the following:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

a report titled “Under Attack<\/a>” on the security and judicial campaigns targeting human rights defenders and independent human rights organizations in Egypt<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And also, issued profiles<\/a> of 18 of the imprisoned defenders showing data about them.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And addresses the Attorney General<\/a>, Mr. Counselor Hamada El-Sawy, to release the imprisoned defenders and stop the torture.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And in its litter, AFTE demanded the National Council for Human Rights<\/a> to stop the security campaigns against human rights defenders and release the detainees.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

2. Statements:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

AFTE issued several statements during September, including:<\/p>\n

– Statement titled “After 19 months of Pre-trial Detention, Patrick Zaki\u2019s Trial Begins Tomorrow before Emergency Court<\/a>“, where ten human rights organizations denounce the State Security Supreme Prosecution’s decision to indict Patrick Zaki, the researcher at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), to trial before the Emergency Court, on charges of “spreading false news inside and outside of the country,” based on an opinion article published two years ago.<\/p>\n

– AFTE also issued a statement urging to stop the arbitrary practices against researcher Ahmed Samir Santawy and abolishes his prison sentence<\/a>. After the Emergency State Security Misdemeanor Court refused to allow Santawy\u2019s lawyer to review the merits of his sentence, The administration of Tora Liman Prison also refused to allow Santawy to obtain textbooks sent to him by the university, as he is studying for his master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n

– In parallel with the International Day for Universal Access to Information<\/a>, AFTE called on the House of Representatives and Senate to start preparing a law that guarantees and regulates the right to the truth and the freedom of information and to create the appropriate conditions for the issuance of the Freedom of Information Act and stop the policy of blocking press websites.<\/p>\n

3. Legal Aid:<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

– Dismissing the appeal of Quranist blogger \u201cReda Abdel-Rahman<\/a>\u201d and renewing his detention for 45 days
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cAhmed Hassanein Mohamed Moussa<\/a>\u201d for 45 extra days
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cMarwa Arafa<\/a>\u201d for 45 Days
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cAhmed Mohammad Abu Khalil<\/a>\u201d for 45 Days
\n– Criminal Court orders to release \u201cAkram Mostafa Farouk\u201d and \u201cMohammad Ahmed Mansou<\/a>r\u201d, and to extend the precautionary measures of \u201cWalid Elgendy\u201d and renewing the detention of \u201cMohammad Abd-Ellah Mokhaimer\u201d
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cSherif El-Rouby<\/a>\u201d for 45 extra days
\n– Criminal Court orders to release \u201cAhmed Saber Ghandour<\/a>\u201d
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the precautionary measures of \u201cHossam El-Saadany<\/a>\u201d for 45 days
\n– Two months imprisonment and a fine of 50 thousand pounds for \u201cOmar Ahmed Al-Hout<\/a>\u201d
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cHamed Sedeek<\/a>\u201d for 45 days
\n– Adjournment of detention order hearing of \u201cAyman Mahmoud Abdel-Halim\u201d and \u201cKholoud Saied Amer<\/a>\u201d to October 4
\n– Criminal Court orders to extend the detention of \u201cBelal Abed-Razek\u201d and \u201cMohamed Gaber Soliman<\/a>\u201d for 45 days
\n– Criminal Court extends the detention of two defendants<\/a> of joining the Ultras White Knights.
\n– October 3 the first hearing session of the two lawsuits<\/a> demanding broadcasting the sessions of the house of representatives and the senate
\n– Criminal Court orders to release \u201cIslam Ali Muhammed<\/a>\u201d
