{"id":32889,"date":"2022-11-27T14:09:30","date_gmt":"2022-11-27T12:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afteegypt.org\/?p=32889"},"modified":"2022-11-27T14:09:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-27T12:09:30","slug":"aftes-weekly-legal-bulletin-20-27-november-2022-the-detention-of-10-defendants-including-sherif-el-rouby-tv-presenter-hala-fahmy-and-ziad-abo-el-fadl-renewed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afteegypt.org\/en\/legal-profiles-en\/2022\/11\/27\/32889-afteegypt.html","title":{"rendered":"AFTE\u2019s Weekly Legal Bulletin (20: 27 November 2022)| The detention of 10 defendants including Sherif El-Rouby,  TV presenter Hala Fahmy and Ziad Abo El-Fadl renewed"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"background-color: #800000; color: #ffffff;\"><b>Supreme State Security Prosecution\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 20, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of Hussein Shehata, and journalist at \u201cParliament newspaper,\u201d Ahmed Fayez Abdel Majid, for 15 days, in connection with case No. 2070 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hussien Shehata is a 57 years old shoe store worker; he was arrested against a post he shared on Facebook about prices hikes and calling for the November 11 demonstrations, while security forces arrested Abdel Majid on November 9 because he published a post on his Facebook profile about activist Alaa Abdel Fatah being forced to end his hunger strike inside prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Abdel Majid and Shehata face charges of joining and financing a terrorist group, participating in a criminal agreement aiming to commit a terrorist act, and using social media with the aim to commit a terrorist act and inciting to commit a terrorist act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 21, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to detain Ahmed Abdel Maged Oraby for 15 days in connection with case No. 2094 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme State Security Prosecution confronted Oraby after his arrest with 15 posts he shared on Facebook regarding economic and political events; Oraby confirmed his ownership of the publishing account and that he wrote these posts due to the hard living conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is noteworthy that Oraby lost an eye during Mohamed Mahmoud&#8217;s clashes. He faces charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, committing the crime of financing terrorism, inciting to commit a terrorist crime, participating in a criminal agreement to commit a terrorist crime, spreading false news and statements, and using an account on the Internet to committ a terrorist crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>November 22 hearings:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of four defendants for 15 days in connection with investigations of case No. 2094 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ziad Abo El-Fadl, Khaled Abdel Mohsen, Mohamed Abou Elaal Abou Eldahab, and Ahmed Abou Elsoud Tawfiq.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abo El-Fadl was arrested on November 11, and he appeared before the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme State Security Prosecution for the first time on November 14, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abou Eldahab and Tawfiq were both arrested on November 10, they were interrogated before the prosecution on November 15. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four of them face charges of joining a terrorist group, committing the crime of financing terrorism, using social media to promote a terrorist act, participating in a criminal agreement to commit a terrorist crime (demonstrations), inciting to commit a terrorist crime (demonstrations), and spreading false news and statements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of activist Sherif El-Rouby for 15 days, in connection with investigations of case No. 1634 of 2022 (State Security).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El-Rouby was listed in this case only after less than three months of his release within the presidential pardon initiative pending another case, in which he spent more than a year and a half in pretrial detention, as El-Rouby participated in a phone interview on Al-Jazeera in which he talked about the difficulties that face the released detainees in living a normal life, he was arrested shortly after the interview. El-Rouby faces charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media, the same charges he faced before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of Momtaz Ahmed Lotfy for 15 days, in connection with investigations of case No. 1539 of 2022 (State Security).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, Lotfy was arrested from his house in Zagazig against the backdrop of publishing a video about Gamasa Prison fire, despite publishing a denial of the news afterward. Lotfy faces charges of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"background-color: #800000; color: #ffffff;\"><b>Criminal Courts<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 21, the Criminal Court (1st Criminal &amp; Terrorism Circuit) renewed the detention of TV presenter Hala Fahmy, for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 441 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). After <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 days on a hunger strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s noteworthy that Fahmy went on her first hunger strike that lasted for 3 days due to poor detention conditions and depriving her of the right to read, exercise, and communicate with others. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security forces arrested Fahmy on April 24, right after she posted a live video on Facebook stating that she was being chased down and mentioned that security force members in civilian clothes stormed her house while she was absent; her arrest came against posting several videos on Facebook.
