The Supreme State Security Prosecution has referred journalist Kareem Ebrahim, a member of the Journalists’ Syndicate and a reporter for Al-Bawaba newspaper, to criminal trial before the Criminal Court on charges of joining a terrorist organization with full knowledge of its objectives. The defendant has been officially notified of the referral order, though the court circuit and date for the first hearing have not yet been set.<\/span><\/p>\n

This decision comes after more than four years that Ebrahim spent in pretrial detention in connection with Case No. 569 of 2020 (Supreme State Security). On December 18, 2024, the Criminal Court (First Circuit, Terrorism) had renewed his detention for an additional 45 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier, on September 19, 2024, (AFTE) submitted a request to the Public Prosecutor, registered as No. 60034 of 2024, Technical Office Grievances, demanding Ibrahim\u2019s mandatory release after exceeding the legal pretrial detention period stipulated in Article 143 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ibrahim was arrested in April 2020 following clashes between police forces and armed elements in Al-Amiriya, where he resides. He was unlawfully detained for one month before being presented to investigative authorities, who charged him with joining a terrorist organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cairo Criminal Court (First Circuit Terrorism) renewed journalist Karim Ebrahim\u2019s detention for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 569 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

On September 19, 2024, AFTE submitted a request to the Attorney General, numbered 60034 for the year 2024, the Technical Office, demanding the immediate release of journalist Karim Ebrahim following the expiration of his pretrial detention that was provided for in Article 143 of the Criminal Procedure Code.<\/span><\/p>\n

Security forces arrested the journalist at Al-Bawaba newspaper and a member of the Journalists Syndicate in April 2020; he was arrested in connection with clashes between the police forces and armed members, which took place in the Alamiria district, his residence place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 24, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the journalist at Al-Bawaba newspaper and the member of the Journalists Syndicate, Karim Ebrahim, for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 569 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ebrahim completed his third year in pretrial detention; as he was arrested in April against the backdrop of the clashes in the Alamiria district, he was forcibly disappeared for six months before appearing before the prosecution which accused him of joining a terrorist group.<\/span><\/p>\n

11 April 2023 “Criminal Court renews the detention of journalist Karim Ebrahim for 45 days as his third year in pretrial detention approaches”\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

On April 11, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the journalist at Al-Bawaba newspaper and the member of the Journalists Syndicate, Karim Ebrahim, for 45 days, pending investigations of case No. 569 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

Security forces arrested Ebrahim in April 2022. He did not appear before the prosecution until in October of the same year, after six months of illegal detention, and his family has not been able to visit him during this period and until now. Ebrahim is accused of joining a terrorist group.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n15 March 2023<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On March 15, the Criminal Court (the Council Chamber) decided to renew the detention of the journalist at Al-Bawaba News newspaper, Karim Ebrahim, for 15 days, pending investigations of case No. 569 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ebrahim completes his third year in pretrial detention within a few weeks; he was arrested on April 14, 2020, against the backdrop of the clashes in the Alamiria district, where he lives. His family couldn\u2019t visit him since the date of his arrest and till now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ebrahim was interrogated before the prosecution six months after his arrest, and he was charged with joining a terrorist group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
