The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) shares with you the statements and joint statement it issued over the past month and campaign, in addition to the legal updates of lawsuits in which AFTE provides legal support to prisoners of conscience or to academics who were subjected to abuse and security prosecutions for expressing their opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) condemned the campaign launched by the security services at dawn on 4 April, which resulted in the arrest of political activists and protesters after they participated in a demonstration outside the Journalists Syndicate to express their solidarity with the Palestinian cause. At least six have been arrested as of the time of releasing this statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Activists and journalists participated in the demonstration where they got water, salt, and bread for a Ramadan iftar (fast-breaking meal) as a symbolic expression of sharing the suffering of the victims of the war waged by the Israeli occupation army on Gaza and to condemn the policy of starving the Strip. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, AFTE condemned the unlawful detention by police forces of the Chairwoman of the Association\u2019s Board of Trustees, lawyer Ragia Omran, along with several activists, during their participation in a solidarity event with women in Palestine and Sudan, in front of the regional office of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in Cairo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event began with the gathering of several activists, journalists, and lawyers, holding banners condemning the crimes against women in Gaza and Sudan, which drew the attention of officials at the regional office for women. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a joint statement, AFTE , the FreeHoda Campaign and other 17 human rights organizations condemned the prolonged arbitrary detention of lawyer and human rights defender Hoda Abdel-Moneim for more than 2,000 days. Following the completion of her previous sentence, which was based on falsified charges, the public prosecution has continued to unlawfully detain Abdel-Moniem by \u2018 reissuing similar fabricated charges against her, also known as \u2018recycling\u2019 her charges. The organizations and the FreeHoda campaign demanded her immediate release from arbitrary detention, especially due to her deteriorating health in prison. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
