This Sunday, The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court, convening at the Badr Prison Reform and Rehabilitation Center,\u00a0 decided to adjourn the trial of Cartoonist Ashraf Omar and journalist Ramadan Gouida, pending case No. 11846 of 2025 (Fifth Settlement Criminal) registered as No. 2240 of 2025 (New Cairo Criminal Court) to the session of 13 July for review and to hear prosecution witnesses. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The session was held in the presence of Ashraf Omar, while it was not possible to transfer Ramadan Gouida from his prison to the court, Omar\u2019s defense submitted a request to the court to allow his relatives to attend the session. Although the court approved the defense\u2019s request, court security refused to implement the decision, and the court then refused to record the request in the session minutes, even after the defense stressed that denying his relatives\u2019 attendance contradicts the principle of public hearings. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Omar was arrested in 22 July 2024, when a security force raided his home in Hadayek October City at 1:30 a.m. that day, they took him to an unknown location, and he remained in pretrial detention for more than a year until the prosecution referred him to criminal trial on 22 November 2025. His arrest followed the publication of cartoons criticizing the country\u2019s internal situation, such as the electricity outage crisis. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Both Omar and Gouida face charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes and assisting it to achieve them, and of financing a terrorist group by collecting, receiving, possessing, transferring, and providing funds, data, and information to the group with the intent that they be used to commit terrorist acts.<\/span><\/p>\n
