The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) shares with you the reports, statements, and joint statements it issued over the past month and campaign, in addition to the legal updates of lawsuits in which AFTE provides legal support to prisoners of conscience or to academics who were subjected to abuse and security prosecutions for expressing their opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) published its second quarterly report on the state of freedom of expression in Egypt between 1 April \u2013 30 June 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the second quarter of 2024, the Egyptian authorities continued to violate the citizens\u2019 right to freedom of expression, in its various forms. They cracked down on all those who protested over the barbaric Zionist war against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, whether they were students, feminists or ordinary people. The report spoke about the prison sentence against disqualified presidential hopeful and former MP Ahmed al-Tantawy, his campaign manager and a number of members of his campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The report tries to analyze the general policies of the Egyptian authorities towards the right to freedom of expression during the second quarter of this year, focusing on the key patterns of violations committed by all parties and their impact on the reality of freedom of expression. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

AFTE Condemned in a statement the Enforced Disappearance of Journalist Khaled Mamdouh before detaining him after 6 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AFTE has filed a complaint with the Attorney General, numbered 846067 for the year 2024, detailing the events of security forces raiding the home of journalist Khaled Mamdouh and taking him to an unknown place. In the complaint, AFTE stated that a security force raided Khaled Mamdouh\u2019s home on July 16, searched it randomly, and refused to disclose their identities, their affiliation, or the reason for his arrest. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a few days, <\/span>The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression condemned the enforced disappearance of cartoonist Ashraf Omar since the early hours of Monday, July 22, before detaining him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ashraf Omar recently published several satirical drawings on \u201cAl-Manassa,\u201d addressing issues such as the electricity crisis and the operation of the monorail amid scarce resources. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a Joint Statement, AFTE and 3 other NGOs hold the Ministry of Interior responsible for the safety of political activist and poet Ahmed Douma against the backdrop of remarks by some pro-government preachers who accused him of infidelity, insanity, and apostasy over the introduction to his poetry collection \u201cCurly\u201d and one of his poems. These accusations pose a threat to Douma\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organizations also warn against targeting Douma over charges of contempt of Islam. They call on the Egyptian authorities to stop the clampdown on him, which has been ongoing since he was released under a presidential pardon last August. <\/span>More<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
