On 10 March 2024, a security force raided the house of journalist Yasser Abu Al-Ela in Giza Governorate, arrested him, and took him to an unknown location, where he remained forcibly disappeared for more than a month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu Al-Ela was referred to the Supreme State Security Prosecution in connection with Case No. 1568 of 2024 (Supreme State Security Prosecution). The prosecution charged him with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes, spreading false news, using a website to commit this crime, and committing a financing crime.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 27 April 2024, a security force raided Abu Al-Ela’s house again and arrested his wife and her brother and sister. The force released the brother shortly later and took the wife and her sister to an unknown destination, before the pair appeared before the State Security Prosecution on 11 May 2024, facing charges of joining a terrorist group, in connection with Case No. 2369 of 2024 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).<\/span><\/p>\n

On 10 November 2024, the Criminal Court (Terrorism) sentenced Abu Al-Ela to 25 years in prison in Case No. 339 of 2022. The verdict was issued in absentia without the presence of Abu Al-Ela or his lawyer, although he had been detained in connection with another case since March 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu Al-Ela is a journalist and member of the Journalists Syndicate. He suffers from frequent pain in his back and has previously <\/span>had Bell\u2019s palsy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
