{"id":5130,"date":"2013-09-22T13:54:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-22T13:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/afteegypt.org\/?p=5130"},"modified":"2013-09-22T13:54:22","modified_gmt":"2013-09-22T13:54:22","slug":"the-egyptian-government-must-positively-respond-to-the-un-high-commissioner-for-human-rights-request-for-a-facts-finding-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afteegypt.org\/en\/advocacy-en\/statements-en\/2013\/09\/22\/5130-afteegypt.html","title":{"rendered":"The Egyptian government must positively respond to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights request for a facts finding mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/afteegypt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/logo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1097\" alt=\"logo\" src=\"http:\/\/afteegypt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/logo.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Member organizations of the Forum of Independent Egyptian Human Rights Organizations (the Forum) welcome the request filed by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) with the Egyptian government, asking for approval to send an official fact-finding mission of international experts to assess the status of human rights in the country.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The mission\u2019s proposed program includes meetings with both government officials and representatives of civil society and human rights groups to discuss practical arrangements to strengthen human rights during the transition to a democratic state that respects human rights.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Member organizations of the Forum urge the caretaker government in Egypt to immediately approve the request and take all measures necessary to facilitate the mission\u2019s tasks.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Forum believes that Egyptian government\u2019s acceptance of the mission will signal the readiness of those in charge of the country\u2019s affairs in this perilous transitional phase to comply with international human rights norms. It will further show a genuine will to impose accountability for serious crimes and abuses, particularly those perpetrated since the beginning of the revolution on January 25.
