The Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the release of defendants Amir Sayed Mohamed and Riyad Mohamed Abdelrahman under house guarantee, after they spent more than two years in pretrial detention pending investigations in Case No. 744 of 2023 (High State Security Cases).
Previously, the Cairo Criminal Court (Second Terrorism Circuit) had renewed the defendants’ detention for 45 days on 27 January 2026, despite their detention exceeding the legal limit under Article 143 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This decision had raised concerns about the continued use of prolonged pretrial detention in similar cases.
Amir and Riyad were arrested on 3 May 2023 in downtown Cairo and were held by security forces without legal basis and in an undisclosed location for eight days before being presented to the prosecution. The defendants were charged with joining a terrorist group, identified as the Ultras Ahly, and publishing and circulating false news and statements that could harm public security and order.
