Contractor released after three years in pretrial detention

18 November 2025

The Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the release of contractor Abdel Rahman Mohamed Alwani, on the guarantee of his place of residence, pending investigations in Case No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). He had faced charges of joining a terrorist group, publishing and broadcasting false news, and using social media accounts to commit such offenses.

Alwani was arrested from his home on November 1, 2022, and held unlawfully for a week before being presented to the prosecution.

Prior to his release, the Criminal Court had repeatedly renewed his pretrial detention in hearings held between April 15 and September 10, 2025, each time extending it for 45 days.


5 February 2025

The Criminal Court (First Circuit Terrorism)  renewed the detention of the contractor, Abdel Rahaman Alwany, for 45 days pending lawsuit No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security Prosecution). 

Alwany is accused of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and information, and using social media to commit a crime. 

Security forces arrested Alwany from his house on the 1st of November 2022, and was illegally detained for a week before being brought before the prosecution.

14 January 2025

Cairo Criminal Court (Second Circuit Terrorism) renewed the detention of the contractor, Abdel Rahaman Alwany, for 45 days pending lawsuit No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security Prosecution). 

Alwany is accused of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and information, and using social media to commit a crime. 

Security forces arrested Alwany from his house on the 1st of November 2022, and was illegally detained for a week before being brought before the prosecution.

4 December 2024
