On 16 December 2025, the Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court, convened at the Badr Security Complex, decided to renew the pretrial detention of Ali Mohamed Ali Abu Al-Magd, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Al-Azhar University, for 45 days pending investigations in Lawsuit No. 2468 of 2023 (Supreme State Security), despite exceeding two years in pretrial detention, in violation of Article 143 of the Criminal Procedure Law.

The student faces charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its objectives; participating in an assembly aimed at harming public security and order and changing the system of governance by force; using force and violence against a public official to compel him to refrain from performing his official duties for a terrorist purpose; and damaging public and private property, movable and immovable, in furtherance of a terrorist objective.

Ali Abu Al-Magd was arrested on 21 October 2023 from his home in the Boulaq El-Dakrour area, allegedly in connection with his participation in demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine. He was held incommunicado, with his family and lawyer unaware of his whereabouts, until he was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on 28 October 2023. The prosecution questioned him on the aforementioned charges and ordered his pretrial detention for 15 days pending investigations.

It is also worth noting that the prosecution had previously issued a decision placing him in the custody of the National Security Agency for 15 days prior to his appearance before the prosecution.
