Supreme State Security Prosecution

On 17 July, the Supreme State Security Prosecution investigated lawyer Ashraf Ashry for the first time, and decided to remand him in custody for 15 days in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022 (Supreme State Security)

The 29-year-old lawyer faces charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.

On 18 July, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of journalist Mohamed Fawzy Mosaad of Eldyar newspaper for 15 days, in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022 (State Security).

Mosaad faces charges of joining a terrorist group and inciting a terrorist act, against the backdrop of sharing a post on Facebook.

The Supreme State Security Prosecution also renewed the detention of student El-Amir Fahim Ahmed for 15 days, in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022 (State Security).

Ahmed was arrested on 28 June on charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and using a social media account to commit a crime.

On 20 July, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed – for the seventh time – the detention of TV presenter Hala Fahmy for 15 days, in connection with Case No. 441 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested Fahmy in April, after she posted a live video on Facebook stating that she was chased down by unknown individuals. She was presented before the prosecution without a lawyer. She faces charges of joining a terrorist group, inciting a terrorist crime, and spreading false news domestically and abroad.

State Council Courts

On 17 July, the Administrative Judiciary Court (the Sixth Circuit Educational) adjourned to 28 August the examination of appeal No. 57029 of 74, filed by AFTE on behalf of student Omar Mohamed Ali, challenging the decision of dismissing him from Thebes Higher Institute for Engineering. The adjournment came as the student’s defense lawyer requested the issuance of a general power of attorney.

The appeal was filed last September against both the Minister of Higher Education and the Dean of Thebes Higher Institute for Engineering. Ali, who was sentenced to life in prison in connection with Case. No. 174 of 2015 (West Cairo Military Felonies), filed several requests to the institute’s administration to allow him to resume his studies inside his prison cell, but his requests were rejected. He was later dismissed from the institute for dropping out of studies.

District Courts

On 18 July, the Belbis Court (the Misdemeanor Terrorism Circuit) sentenced the engineering student at Misr University for Science and Technology, Abdel-Rahman Magdy Mohamed El-Attar, to one year in prison in connection with Case No. 3886 of 2022 (Mashtool El Souk misdemeanor).

El-Attar was arrested from his house in Mashtool El Souk on 25 April. He appeared before the prosecution for the first time on 28 May, facing charges of joining a terrorist group and possessing publications that promote its ideas.
