The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to release four students aged between 17 and 19 years old under the guarantee of their place of residence, who were arrested for creating a satirical event on Facebook titled “Batman Helwan,” for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 440 of 2022.

The four students are physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy; they were arrested on July 4, 2022, after their event went viral among social media users. The investigation authorities accused the four students of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

On August 13, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of four students aged between 17 and 19 years old, who were arrested for creating a satirical event on Facebook titled “Batman Helwan,” for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 440 of 2022.

The four students are physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy; they were arrested on July 4, 2022, after their event went viral among social media users. The investigation authorities accused the four students of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

23 May 2023 “Criminal Court renews the detention of four students for 45 days for creating a sarcastic event on Facebook”

On May 23, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 440 of 2022.

The defendants range in age from 17 to 19; they were arrested on July 4, against the backdrop of their participation in creating a sarcastic event on Facebook titled “Batman Helwan” after it went viral and many social media users interacted with it. The Ministry of Interior indicated in a statement regarding the incident that they exploited the volume of interaction to achieve financial gains, despite the lack of evidence to support this claim. The four students face charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

10 April 2023 “Criminal Court renews the detention of four students for 45 days; for participating in the “Batman of Helwan” event” 

On April 10 hearing, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of four students for participating in promoting a sarcastic event on social media titled “Batman Helwan”; their detention was renewed for 45 days pending investigations of case No. 440 of 2022. 

The four defendants are young students, physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy. Police forces arrested the four of them last July, and they were accused of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

On February 8, the Criminal Court (First Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of four students, physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy, for 45 days each, pending Case No. 440 of 2022.

On July 4, Security forces arrested the four students against the backdrop of participating in a parody event called “the battle of Batman in Helwan,” which included wearing a “Batman” costume and gathering in front of the Helwan metro station on August 13, to choose the winner of the real Batman title. They face charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

7 November 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of 4 students for 15 days; for participating in the “Batman of Helwan” event” 

On November 7, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of four students, physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy, for 15 days each. In connection with Case No. 440 of 2022.

24 October 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews four students’ detention for 15 days; for participating in the “Batman of Helwan” event” 

On October 24, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of four students, physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, cooperation institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy, for 15 days each. 

This comes in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022, in which the four students face charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act against the backdrop of their participation in the parody event “Batman of Helwan” which went viral among social media users. 

26 September 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of four students participants in Batman Helwan event” 

On September 26, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Physical therapy student at Heliopolis University Anas Mahmoud Zahran, Cooperation Institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda and Eslam Nagdy for 15 days in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022.

The four students were arrested against the background of their participation in a sarcastic event called “Batman Helwan,” after many social media users interacted with the event; in a statement regarding the incident, the Ministry of Interior announced that all legal measures had been taken against the event’s organizers as they exploited the reach volume in order to achieve financial gains. The four students face charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

On September 12, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Physical therapy student at Heliopolis University Anas Mahmoud Zahran, Cooperation Institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, and high school students Mazen Reda, and Eslam Nagdy for 15 days in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022.

On August 29, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Physical therapy student Anas Mahmoud Zahran, Cooperation Institute student Karim Mohamed Refaat, high school student Mazen Reda, and high school student Eslam Nagdy for 15 days in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022.

On the 2nd of August, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of the high school student Eslam Nagdy Mohamed Aziz for 15 days in connection with Case No. 440 of 2022.  

Security forces arrested the 18 years old Nagdy and three other students on July 4, against the backdrop of participating in a parody event called “the battle of Batman in Helwan,” which included wearing a “Batman” costume and gathering in front of the Helwan metro station on August 13, to choose the winner of the real Batman title.
