Criminal Court renews journalist Medhat Ramadan’s detention for 45 days despite exceeding maximum period of pretrial detention

On March 29, the Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the journalist at Shababik newspaper, Medhat Ramadan, for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 680 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

Security forces arrested Ramadan from his house on May 28, 2020, and confiscated several personal belongings, including a laptop. After a month of illegal detention, Ramadan appeared bedore the investigation authorities against accusations of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.

1 August 2022 “Criminal Court renews the detention of journalist Medhat Ramadan for 45 days” 

On the 1st of August, Cairo Criminal Court decided to renew the detention of the journalist at Shababik newspaper, Medhat Ramadan, for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 680 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution). 

On May 28, 2020, security forces arrested Ramadan from his house in Menofia governorate and confiscated his personal belongings; he was subjected to enforced disappearance for over a month till he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on June 27 of the same year, which in turn charged him with joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.
