Criminal Court renews the detention of barista over Facebook Post calling for demonstrations

The Criminal Court (Second Circuit) renewed the detention of Gaber Mohamed Badawy for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 1977 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested the 48-year-old barista, Badway, from his house in Alexandria on October 24, 2022, over posting a call for November 11 demonstrations on Facebook. Badawy faces accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, incitement to commit a terrorist act, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.


Criminal Court renews Gaber Mahmoud Badawy’s detention for 45 days for calling for November 11 demonstrations

8 May 2023

On the 8th of May hearing, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Gaber Mohamed Badawy for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 1977 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). 

On October 24, police forces stormed Badawy’s house and arrested him; he was illegally detained in an unknown location for two weeks for sharing Facebook posts where he called for the November 11 demonstrations. 

Badawy faces accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, incitement to commit a terrorist act, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

27 March 2023 

On March 27, the Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Gaber Mahmoud Badway for 45 days, pending investigations of case No. 1977 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested Badawy from his house on October 24 against the backdrop of posting calls for November 11 demonstrations on Facebook. Badawy faces accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, incitement to commit a terrorist act, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

28 November 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews Gaber Mahmoud Badawy’s detention for 15 days; for calling to demonstrate on November 11” 

On November 28, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of 48 years old Gaber Mahmoud Badawy for 15 days, in connection with investigations of case No. 1977 of 2022 (State Security). 

Badawy was arrested from his house in Alexandria on October 24; he was interrogated before the Supreme State Security Prosecution for the first time on November 7; for posting a call for the November 11 demonstrations. Badawy faces charges of joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, incitement to commit a terrorist act, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

14 November 2022 

On November 14, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Gaber Mahmoud Badawy for 15 days, in connection with case No. 1977 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). 

Security forces arrested the 48 years old Badawy on October 24 from his house in Sidi Bishr, Alexandria governorate, after posting a call for the November 11 demonstrations. Badawy faces charges of joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, incitement to commit a terrorist act, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.
