Criminal Court

The Criminal Court (Third Circuit) renewed the detention of Mohamed Ahmed Saad for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 930 of 2019 (Supreme State Security), known in the media as “the Alliance of Hope lawsuit.” which included a large number of political activists, Although he didn’t participate in any political activity.

Saad has begun his sixth year in pretrial detention, exceeding the legal period stipulated in the law. 

He was arrested on May 17, 2019, from inside the examination hall at the Faculty of Commerce at Al-Azhar University and appeared before the Prosecution on July 1. 

Saad faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, financing this group, spreading false news and information, and using a social media account to spread false news.

 

10 June 2024 sessions 

Cairo Criminal 

The Cairo Criminal Court (Third Circuit Terrorism) decided to renew the detention of two persons for 45 days who are: 

  • Omar Mohamed Mohamed ElDahma, pending investigations in Case No. 2469 of 2023 (Supreme State Security ), following his participation in demonstrations of solidarity with Palestine Friday, 13 October, in Alexandria.

Security forces stopped ElDahma, a graphic designer, in front of his house in Alexandria, Miami. 

The prosecution charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and participating in a gathering that would put public peace in danger.

  • Lawyer Saied Hassan Ali’s detention, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security).

After his release from another, the Supreme State Security Prosecution investigated Ali in this lawsuit. The lawyer and human rights defender faces accusations of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.

Supreme State Security Prosecution

On the same day, The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of two others for 15 days: 

  • Mahmoud Nasser Ali Suleiman pending investigations in Case No. 1410 of 2024 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

On May 1, 2024, Suleiman was arrested from a street in Ismailia Governorate and remained unlawfully detained until May 4, 2024, when he was presented to the prosecution, which charged him with joining a terrorist group while knowing its purposes and publishing and broadcasting false news and statements that may harm security and public order, and use an account on social media to publish and broadcast false news.

Suleiman was not confronted with any posts on social media indicating that he had published any news. 

 

  • Muhammad Taha Abdel Mawjoud Taha, pending investigations in Case No. 2526 of 2023 (Supreme State Security).

On 10 March 2024, Taha was arrested while returning from work outside the country to spend a vacation with his family.

Taha was presented to the Supreme State Security Prosecution on 11 March 2024. He was investigated in the case on charges of joining a terrorist group, publishing and broadcasting false news and data that would harm security and public order, and using an account on social media networks for the purpose of publishing and broadcasting false news and data, before deciding to detain him pending investigation.

State Security Prosecution

The State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of Zyad Muhammad Ahmed Al-Basiouny for 15 days pending investigations in Case No. 1941 of 2024 State Security on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.

He was arrested due to his participation in writing a statement on behalf of the “Students for Palestine” group demanding facilitating the Joining of Palestinian students in Egypt to study and exempting them from expenses.

On April 30, Al-Basyouny attended a meeting with other students to discuss the situation in Palestine. They also established a student group that was supportive of Palestine in all Egyptian universities, and they chose the name “Students for Palestine” for their group.

Al-Basyouny was arrested from his home at dawn on May 9, disappeared in an unknown location, and was interrogated regarding his family’s political activity, as well as his student activities.

The group also issued a statement in which they called on the Ministry of Higher Education to ban products that support the Israeli occupation.

Al-Basyouny is a 20-year-old student at the Acting Institute.
