The Criminal Court (Third Circuit) renewed the detention of Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

Last week, AFTE submitted a request to the Attorney General, numbered 60036 for the year 2024, the Technical Office, demanding the immediate release of translator and political activist Marwa Arafa following the expiration of his pretrial detention that was provided for in Article 143 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in case No. 570 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

Al-Tohamy was arrested on June 3, 2020, and remained under enforced disappearance at a National Security headquarters in Cairo for 17 days. The prosecution’s investigations with Al-Tohamy focused on the accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who resides in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy. Al-Tohamy denied these accusations before the Prosecution and stated that his security targeting was due to his academic research on the Arab Spring revolutions.

The prosecution accused Al-Tohamy of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

19 September 2024: AFTE Submits a Request to Attorney General to Release Academic Ahmed Al-Tomahy After Pretrial Detention Period Ends

AFTE submitted a request to the Attorney General, numbered 60027 for the year 2024, the Technical Office, demanding the immediate release of Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, following the expiration of his pretrial detention that was provided for in Article 143 of the Criminal Procedure Code in lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

14 July 2024: Detention of Academic Ahmed Al-Tomahy Renewed After Four Years in Pretrial Detention, Despite Remote Trial Interruption

The Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

The decision came despite the interruption in the broadcast of his remote trial session, as he was presented via video conference from the Badr Rehabilitation and Correctional Center 1.

The court did not respond to the defense’s request to postpone the session so that he could be presented in person.

Despite spending more than three years in pretrial detention, the Criminal Court extends the detention of academic Ahmed AlTomahy for 45 days

6 August 2023

The Criminal Court (First Circuit) renewed the detention of academic Ahmed Altohamy for 45 extra days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), in which Altohamy has been detained for more than three years against accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who is residing in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy.

Security forces arrested the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University on June 3, 2020. Altohamy went on a hunger strike that lasted several weeks in protest against his continued detention, although he didn’t commit any crime.

After his arrest, Altohamy was subjected to enforced disappearance for 17 days. After the interrogations before the prosecution, he faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

21 June 2023 “Criminal Court renewed Ahmed AlTomahy’s detention for 45 days despite his hunger strike”

On June 21, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed AlTohamy, for 45 days pending investigations of case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

It is worth noting that Al-Tohamy started a hunger strike this month; in protest of his continued pretrial detention of three years without committing a crime, AFTE filed a report to the Public Prosecutor’s office that carried No. 32276 of 2023; To open an urgent investigation into the incident of his hunger strike to transfer him to the prison hospital to receive medical treatment, and releasing him under any guarantee.

Police forces arrested Al-Tohamy from his home on 3 June 2020. He remained under enforced disappearance for 17 days till he was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which accused him of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

7 June 2023 “AFTE submits a report to the attorney general regarding academic Ahmed AlTomahy’s hunger strike”

Today, AFTE submitted a report to the attorney general that is bearing No. 32276 of 2023; To open an urgent investigation into the incident of the hunger strike of the Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed AlTohamy, which began on June 3, to transfer him to the prison hospital to receive medical treatment, and releasing him under any guarantee.

AlTohamy informed his family of his start in a total hunger strike in protest of his continued pretrial detention of three years without committing a crime, despite the code of criminal procedures stipulating that the maximum period of pretrial detention is two years. 

Security forces arrested Altohamy from his house on June 3, 2020, and he was forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters for 17 days, Altohamy faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.

 

9 May 2023 “Despite exceeding maximum period of pretrial detention; Criminal Court renews Ahmed Al-Tohamy’s detention for 45 days” 

On May 9, Cairo Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed Al-Tohamy Abdel Hay, for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

Police forces arrested Al-Tohamy from his home on 3 June 2020, against accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who is residing in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy, which AlTohamy has denied before the prosecution. 

Al-Tohamy faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

29 March 2023

On March 29, the Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Ahmed Al-Tohamy for 45 days, pending investigation of case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, was arrested on June 3, 2020,  but his whereabouts were unknown for 17 days, as he was forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters until he was brought before the Prosecution on June 20. He is detained pending this case against accusations of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.

24 January 2023 “despite exceeding 2 years in pretrial detention; Criminal Court renews academic Ahmed Al-Tohamy’s detention for 45 days” 

In the hearing of January 24, The Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of  Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

The Supreme State Security prosecution charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media. The questioning of Tohamy focused on his alleged collaboration with the US-based activist Mohamed Sultan regarding a lawsuit the latter filed in the US against former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy, despite Al-Tohamy denying these allegations.

12 December 2022

In the hearing of December 12, The Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of  Ahmed Al-Tohamy, the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

Police forces arrested Al-Tohamy from his home on 3 June 2020. He remained under enforced disappearance for 17 days. The Supreme State Security prosecution charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media. The questioning of Tohamy focused on his alleged collaboration with the US-based activist Mohamed Sultan regarding a lawsuit the latter filed in the US against former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy, despite Al-Tohamy denying these allegations.

30 October 2022 “Criminal Court renews academic Ahmed Al-Tohamy’s detention for 45 days; despite exceeding 2 years in pretrial detention” 

On October 30, the Criminal Court (3rd Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed Al-Tohamy Abdel Hay, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

 

Al-Tohamy was listed in that case against accusations of collaborating with the Egyptian activist Mohamed Sultan, who is residing in the United States, in the case Sultan filed against the former Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawy, which AlTohamy has denied before the investigating authorities.

 

After his arrest on June 3, 2020, the investigating authorities charged Al-Tohamy with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

14 June 2022 “Criminal Court renews Ahmed Al-Tohamy’s detention for 45 days” 

On June 14, The Criminal Court (The Fourth Circuit Terrorism) decided to renew the detention of the assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, Ahmed Al-Tohamy Abdel Hay, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

Al-Tohamy was arrested on June 3, 2020; he was subjected to enforced disappearance at national security headquarter in Cairo for 17 days until he was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on June 20, which decided to detain him pending the current case on charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.

28 March 2022 Criminal Court renews Dr. Ahmed Al-Tohamy’s detention for 45 days

On Monday, 28 March, The Criminal Court (The Third Circuit Terrorism) decided to renew the detention of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tohamy for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 649 of 2020 (Supreme State Security).

On June 3, 2020, Al-Tohamy was arrested, later on June 20, he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution in connection with the current case, which charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media.

13 July 2021 “Criminal Court orders 45 Extra Days of Detention for Dr.”Ahmed AlTohamy AbdelHay””

Cairo Criminal Court “The Third Circuit Terrorism” considered the detention order of Dr.” Ahmed AlTomahy AbdelHay”, and ordered to renew his detention for 45 extra days, this came pending Case No. 649 of 2020 Supreme State Security, The mentioned court considered the order to renew the defendant detention on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, in the presence of AFTE’s lawyer.

Dr. “Ahmed AlTohamy” was arrested on June 3, 2020, and forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters until he was brought before the Public Prosecution Office on June 20 of the same year, until the prosecution decided to include him pending the mentioned case, and his detention is still pending renewal till now.

The investigations charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing a social media website.

11 May 2021

Cairo criminal court (Third circuit terrorism), decided at its meeting held today, 11 May 2021, at the police academy in Turrah, to renew the detention of Dr.” Ahmed AlTomahy AbdelHay” for 45 days pending investigations into case No. 649 of 2020, Supreme State Security, in which he’s accused of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.

Dr. “Ahmed” was arrested on June 3, 2020, and for 17 days, he was forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters until he was brought before the Public Prosecution Office on June 20 of the same year, He was imprisoned pending the Supreme State Security Case No. 649 of. 2020.

“AlTohamy” is working as an assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University since 2014, He previously worked as a researcher and then a professor at the National Institute for Social and Criminological Research (NCSCR) in Cairo from the year 2000 until 2014, and a researcher at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS) from 1996 until 2000, In 2019 he was a visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin. and also has published many writings in scientific periodicals.

11 April 2021

The Third Circuit Terrorism decided to renew the detention of Doctor Ahmed AlTomahy AbdelHay for 45 days pending investigations into case No. 649 of 2020, Supreme State Security.

He was arrested on June 3, 2020, but his whereabouts were unknown for 17 days, as he was forcibly disappeared at the Cairo National Security headquarters until he was brought before the Public Prosecution Office on June 20. He was imprisoned pending the Supreme State Security Case 649/2020 on charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media.

AlTohamy is a researcher in comparative politics and international relations, working as an assistant professor of political science at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University since 2014. He previously worked as a researcher and then a professor at the National Institute for Social and Criminal Research in Cairo from 2000 until 2014 and a researcher at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies from 1996 until 2000. In 2019 he was a visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin. AlTohamy has published many writings in scientific periodicals.
