Criminal Court renews the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days

10 April 2023 

On April 10, the Criminal Court (Second Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days, pending investigations of case No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), in which Ghanem is convicted for his journalistic work. 

Police forces arrested the 68 years old Ghanem from his house in May 2021; during the investigations, Ghanem was not confronted with any evidence proving the accusations against him; he was instead interrogated about his journalistic work and opinions. 

Ghanem suffers from several health problems, most notably an enlarged prostate and health problems in his bones; he had several surgeries and diabetes. He faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit crimes.

8 February 2023

On February 8, the Criminal Court (First Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days in connection with lawsuit No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

On May 21, 2021, Security forces arrested Ghanem from his house located in the 6th of October City, Giza governorate, after they searched his house and confiscated some of his personal belongings, including his personal phone and laptop, he was arrested without explaining any reasons for such, and he was taken to an unknown location, five days after; he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution. Ghanem is charged with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

15 November 2022 

On November 15, the Criminal Court (2nd Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist and presenter Tawfiq Ghanem, for 45 days, in connection with Case No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security). 

On May 21, 2021, a police force arrested the 67 years old Ghanem from his house on the 6th of October City after searching his home and confiscating his mobile, laptop, and other personal belongings. In his interrogations, before the Supreme State Security Prosecution Ghanem did not face any facts or exhibits related to the subject of the accusation, but he was asked about the history of his journalistic work and his intellectual opinions.

Ghanem suffers from several health problems, most notably  an enlarged prostate and health problems in his bones; he had several surgeries and diabetes. He faces charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

29 August 2022 “Criminal Court renews Journalist Tawfiq Ghanem’s detention for 45 days” 

On August 29, The Criminal Court (Third Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days in connection with case No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

Ghanem was arrested from his house in the 6th of October district on May 21, 2021, after his house was searched  and some of his personal belongings were confiscated, five days later he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution against charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

30 May 2022 “Criminal Court renews Journalist Tawfiq Ghanem’s detention for 45 days” 

Yesterday, The Criminal Court (Fifth Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days in connection with lawsuit No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security Prosecution).

On May 21, 2021, Security forces arrested Ghanem from his house located in the 6th of October City, Giza governorate, after they searched his house and confiscated some of his personal belongings, including his personal phone and laptop, he was arrested without explaining any reasons for such, and he was taken to an unknown location, five days after; he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

the Supreme State Security Prosecution charged Ghanem with several charges including; joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

11 April 2022 “Criminal Court renews Journalist Tawfiq Ghanem’s detention for 45 days”

On April 11 hearing, The Criminal Court (Fifth Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem for 45 days in connection with lawsuit No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security).

On May 21, 2021, police forces arrested Ghanem from his house. After five days of the illegal detention, he appeared before the Supreme State Security, which charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

Ghanem suffers from an enlarged prostate and suffering from health problems in his bones; and he had several undergoing surgeries, and finally, diabetes, which requires special medical care.

 

8 March 2022 “Criminal Court renews Journalist Tawfiq Ghanem’s detention for 45 days”

On Tuesday, March 8, The Criminal Court (The 3rd Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security).

Ghanem worked as editor-in-chief of Islam Online website, and he worked as director of the regional office of Anadolu Agency in Cairo, he decided to retire in 2015. Since his retirement, he stopped all journalistic and media activities. on May 21, 2021, police forces arrested Amer from his house and after five days of illegal detention he appeared before the Supreme State Security which charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.

15 December 2021

On Wednesday, December 15, The Criminal Court (The Fifth Circuit Criminal/ Terrorism) decided to renew the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem, for 45 days in connection with Case No. 238 of 2021 (Supreme State Security).

A police force arrested Amer on May 21, 2021, from his house in 6th of October City, Giza governorate, after they searched the house and confiscated some of his personal belongings, five days later he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution at the 5th settlement.

Ghanem held positions such as editor-in-chief of Islam Online, and he served as director of the regional office of Anadolu Agency in Cairo, he decided to retire in 2015. Since his retirement, he stopped all journalistic and media activities.

Supreme State Security Prosecution charged Ghanem with Joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and misusing social media to commit a crime.
