Criminal Court renews three defendants’ detention for 45 days against Facebook posts

The Criminal Court (Second Circuit) renewed the detention of the deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, Student Islam Ramadan Kamel, and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader, for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). 

The police forces arrested the defendants at various times in November 2022 for sharing their political views. Elsayed Othman shared a video via Facebook complaining about price hikes, while the 83-year-old Ahmed Adel Soliman called for the November 11 demonstrations. 

All of them face the same repeated accusations, which are usually leveled against opponents and critics of the current political regime, which are joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

On Sunday’s hearing, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) renewed the detention of the deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, Student Islam Ramadan Kamel, Adel Ahmed Soliman, and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader, for 45 days, pending investigations of lawsuit No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

28 March 2023 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews 4 defendants’ detention for sharing their opinions on poor living conditions” 

On March 28, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the pretrial detention of four defendants against the backdrop of sharing their opinions on poor living conditions. Their detention was renewed for 15 days pending investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). 

The four defendants shared posts on social media calling for the November 11 demonstrations which goes against the current domistic regime, they’re deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, the nursing student at Ain Shams University, Islam Ramadan Kamel, the 83 years old Adel Ahmed Soliman, and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader. 

The defendants were arrested closely at time. They face accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

6 March 2023 “The pretrial detention of four defendants renewed for 15 days after posting calls for demonstrations in protest against poor living conditions” 

On March 6, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of four defendants for 15 days pending investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security); for posting calls of November 11 demonstrations on social media. 

The four defendants are of different ages and social backgrounds, the 55-year-old deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, the 83-year-old house guard Adel Soliman, the 38 years old Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader, and the nursing student at Ain Shams University, Islam Ramadan Kamel.

The defendants were arrested at separate times last November. After interrogation, they were charged with joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

20 February 2023 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of 4 defendants for 15 days; for sharing political posts” 

On Monday, February the 20th. The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the pretrial detention of four defendants for 15 days pending investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

The four defendants are the 55-year-old deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, the 83-year-old house guard Adel Soliman, the 38 years old Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader, and the nursing student at Ain Shams University, Islam Ramadan Kamel. 

The arrest of the four defendants resulted from sharing several posts on social media regarding the price hikes or calling for November 11 demonstrations. They were accused of joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.

6 February 2023 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews four defendants’ pretrial detention for 15 days for calling to November 11 demonstration” 

On February 6, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of four people arrested for calling to demonstrate on November 11, for 15 days pending investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (Supreme State Security). 

The four people are the deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, who was arrested on November 1 for posting a video on his Facebook profile about price hikes, the nursing student at Ain Shams University, Islam Ramadan Kamel, who was arrested near his house in Zaitoun district in Cairo, the 83 years old house guard, Adel Ahmed Soliman who was arrested after posting a video calling for November 11 demonstrations and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader.

The four defendants are charged with joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act. 

12 December 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of 4 defendants; for calling to demonstrate on November 11” 

 

On December 12,  the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of the four defendants, Yehia Elsayed Othman,  Islam Ramadan Kamel, Adel Ahmed Soliman, and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader for 15 days, in connection with investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (State Security).

28 November 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of 4 defendants; for calling to demonstrate on November 11” 

 

On November 28, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of the deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman,  the nursing student at Ain Shams University, Islam Ramadan Kamel, Adel Ahmed Soliman, and Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Qader for 15 days, in connection with investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (State Security). 

 

Security forces arrested the 55 years old Othman on the 1st of November; for posting a video on his Facebook account about the price rise, while the 83 years old property guard Adel Soliman for posting a video calling for the November 11 demonstrations. The four defendants were charged with joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act. 

 

 

14 November 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of 3 people for 15 days; for calling to demonstrate on November 11” 

 

On November 14, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the pretrial detention of the 55-year-old deputy director of the Information Technology Department at Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yehia Elsayed Othman, who was arrested on November the 1st and underwent the first interrogation session before the Prosecution on November 7, for posting a video on his Facebook account about price hikes. 

It also renewed the detention of Islam Ramadan Kamel, the nursing student at Ain Shams University, who was arrested on October 10 near his house in Zaitoun district in Cairo, and Adel Ahmed Soliman, the 83 years old doorman. He was arrested for posting a video calling for the November 11 demonstrations. 

This came pending investigations of case No. 1893 of 2022 (State Security); the three of them face charges of joining and financing a terrorist group with their knowledge of its aims, inciting a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act through social media, spreading false news, and participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist act.
