Criminal Court renews Agricultural engineer Ashraf Elgamal’s detention for 45 days for posting about price hikes

On the 8th of May hearing, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew the detention of agricultural engineer Ashraf Ali Elgamal for 45 days pending investigations of lawsuit No. 1977 of 2022.

Elgamal’s arrest came after he shared several Facebook posts regarding price hikes; he’s in pretrial detention for six months against charges of joining a terrorist group, financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, participating in a criminal agreement to commit a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act, and incitement to commit a terrorist act.

On March 27, the Criminal Court (Third Circuit) decided to renew the detention of agricultural engineer Ashraf Ali Elgamal, for 45 days pending investigations of case No. 1977 of 2022. 

Egamal was arrested on October 28, against the backdrop of sharing posts about price hikes on social media. Elgamal faces accusations of joining a terrorist group, financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, participating in a criminal agreement to commit a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act, and incitement to commit a terrorist act.

30 January 2023 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of Agricultural engineer Ashraf Ali Elgamal for 15 days” 

On January 30, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Agricultural engineer Ashraf Ali Elgamal for 15 days,  pending investigations of case No. 1977 of 2022.

Security forces arrested Elgamal on October 28 of last year; against the backdrop of posting about price hikes on social media. The prosecution interrogated him for the first time on November 5, and charged him with joining a terrorist group, financing a terrorist group, spreading false news, participating in a criminal agreement to commit a terrorist act, promoting a terrorist act, and incitement to commit a terrorist act.
