Journalist Moataz Bellah Hasab Elnaby has been transferred from Al-Ashir Min Ramadan Prison to Minya Prison without any stated reasons, after spending more than three and a half years in pretrial detention.
The transfer was carried out suddenly, without allowing him to take his essential belongings from Al-Ashir Min Ramadan Prison, adding to his hardship in his new detention facility. The decision has also caused significant distress for his family, as it forces them to endure the difficulty of traveling from Cairo to Minya to visit him.
Hasab Elnaby was arrested on July 12, 2021, over Facebook posts allegedly attributed to him, despite his denial of ownership of the account.
He has been charged with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its objectives, publishing and disseminating false news and information that could harm public security and order, and using a social media account to spread false information.
13 January 2025: Moataz Bellah Hasab Elnaby Referred to Criminal Trial After Over 3 Years in Pretrial Detention
The Supreme State Security Prosecution has decided to refer Moataz Bellah Hasab Elnaby to criminal trial before the Criminal Court on charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its objectives. The defendant has been formally notified of the referral order, but the date for the first court session has yet to be determined.
Hasab Elnaby has spent over three years in pretrial detention. On December 18, 2024, the Criminal Court (First Circuit Terrorism) renewed his detention for 45 days pending investigations into the case.
Security forces arrested Hasab Elnaby on July 12, 2021, due to several posts attributed to him on Facebook, despite his denial of owning the account in question.
He faces several charges, including joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its objectives, publishing and broadcasting false news and statements that could harm public security and order, and using a social media account to disseminate false news and statements.

Yesterday, the Criminal Court (Third Terrorism Circuit) decided to renew the detention of Moataz Bellah Hasab Elnaby for 45 days in connection with lawsuit No. 965 of 2021 (Supreme State Security).
Hasab-Elnaby was arrested last July; the following day, he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution pending the lawsuit. The Prosecution confronted him with several printed Facebook Posts from an account attributed to him; he denied his ownership of the account and the published posts.
