During the last month (July), the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) monitored the state and problems of freedom of thought and expression in Egypt. Through the activities of the various units, AFTE issued papers that take a deeper look at some of the issues of freedom of thought and expression currently raised, and also provided legal aid in cases related to freedom of thought and expression.

 

1. Publications: 

AFTE published the quarterly report on the state of freedom of expression in Egypt titled Proactive Repression, Monitoring and analyzing the Egyptian government’s policies towards the right to freedom of expression and circulation of information help determine the state institutions’ attitude towards supporting or violating these rights, and presenting and analyzing the violations that were monitored and documented.

 

 

AFTE also published a paper titled Egypt’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) and where it stands according to the international standards in which it analyzes and studies the Egyptian Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) No. 151 of 2020 n accordance with international standards and presents its recommendations in this regard.

 

 

2. Statements: 

Publishing of a statement entitled “The Pegasus Project: MENA Surveillance Coalition demands an end to the sale of surveillance technology to the region’s autocratic governments” in which AFTE along with 33 human rights organizations, the immediate halt of to the use, sale, and transfer of surveillance technology targeting human rights defenders to the autocratic oppressive governments.
