El-Hussaini Farghaly’s Trial Adjourned to September 15 Over Video on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court postponed Case No. 13673 of 2024 (Fifth Settlement Criminal Court), registered under No. 2992 of 2024 (New Cairo Criminal Court) and No. 330 of 2024 (Supreme State Security), in which the defendant El-Hussaini Farghaly Othman Nafadi is charged, to September 15, because the defendant could not be brought from custody to the courtroom.

Despite the defendant’s absence, the court heard testimony from two prosecution witnesses, including the officer who arrested Farghaly; the officer stated that he does not recall any details of the case and only remembered making the arrest.

Farghaly was arrested in April 2022 after posting videos on his personal YouTube channel about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. He faces charges of joining a terrorist organization and publishing false news at home and abroad.

The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court postponed Case No. 13673 of 2024 (Fifth Settlement Criminal Court), registered under No. 2992 of 2024 (New Cairo Criminal Court) and No. 330 of 2024 (Supreme State Security), in which the defendant El-Hussaini Farghaly Othman Nafadi is charged, to June 9 to allow the testimony of the rest of the witness.

Investigations charged Farghaly with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes, deliberately broadcasting false news, statements, and rumors by publishing posts on social media that allegedly undermined the prestige of the state, harmed national interests, disturbed public security, spread fear among citizens, and damaged the public interest. These accusations stem from a video he posted on his personal YouTube channel about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which the prosecution considered a threat to Egypt’s water resources. It is noteworthy that he was arrested on April 7, 2022.

1 February 2026 “After a year in pretrial detention; Criminal Court renews El-Hussaini Farghaly’s detention for 45 days for posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam” 

The Second Terrorism Circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court has adjourned the hearing of lawsuit No. 13673 of 2024 (Fifth Settlement Criminal Court), in which the defendant El-Hussaini Farghaly Othman Nafadi is charged, to 15 April. The hearing was adjourned to allow the testimony of the Investigating officer.

Farghaly was arrested on 5 April 2022 following the publication of a video on his personal YouTube channel about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which the prosecution considered a threat to Egypt’s water resources. He was first questioned by the Supreme State Security Prosecution on 7 April 2022 and faces charges of joining a terrorist organization and spreading false news domestically and internationally.

5 April 2023: After a year in pretrial detention; Criminal Court renews El-Hussaini Farghaly’s detention for 45 days for posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

On April 5, the Criminal Court (First Circuit) decided to renew El-Hussaini Farghaly’s pretrial detention for 45 days in connection with case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

Farghaly’s arrest on April 5, 2020, came against the grounds of posting a video on his Youtube channel discussing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which threatens Egypt’s water reserves. Accordingly, the prosecution accused him of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act. 

4 September 2022 “After posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam; Criminal Court renews the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 45 days” 

On September 4, the Criminal Court (First Terrorism Criminal Circuit) decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 45 days in connection with case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

 

Farghaly was arrested on April 5 after posting videos on his Youtube channel discussing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam; he wasn’t brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution until April 7, which in turn charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

22 August 2022 “Criminal Court renews El-Hussaini Farghaly’s detention for 45 days for posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam” 

On August 22, the Criminal Court (First Terrorism Cicruit) decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 45 days, into investigations of Case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

The Supreme State Security Prosecution interrogated Farghaly for the first time on April 7, after he posted videos on his Youtube channel discussing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Farghly faces charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and inciting a terrorist act.

7 August 2022 “For the 5th time; Supreme State Security Prosecution renews El-Hussaini Farghaly’s detention for 15 days for posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam” 

On August 7, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 15 days in connection with investigations of Case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

Farghaly was arrested after he posted videos on his Youtube channel discussing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Supreme State Security Prosecution interrogated him for the first time on April 7, and charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

24 July 2022 “After posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam; Supreme State Security Prosecution renews El-Hussaini Farghaly’s detention for 15 days” 

On July 24, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 15 days in connection with investigations of Case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

Farghaly’s arrest comes against the backdrop of posting videos on his YouTube channel regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, after his arrest he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on April 7, which in turn charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

6 July 2022 

Yesterday, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 15 days in connection with investigations of Case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

Farghly was arrested against the backdrop of posting videos about Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on his Youtube channel, the Supreme State Security Prosecution investigated him for the first time on April 7, which in turn charged him with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act.

12 June 2022 

Yesterday, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of El-Hussaini Farghaly for 15 days in connection with investigations of Case No. 330 of 2022 (State Security).

The Supreme State Security Prosecution investigated Farghaly for the first time on April 7, and he faces charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news, and inciting a terrorist act. These charges come against the backdrop of posting videos on his youtube channel regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
