The Supreme State Security Prosecution has ordered the release of student Abdelrahman Safwat Mohamadeen Hamad, on bail at his place of residence, after spending nearly two years in pretrial detention in Case No. 3434 of 2024 (Supreme State Security).

Previously, on January 20, 2026, the Criminal Court (First Criminal Circuit in Badr)  had renewed Mohamadeen’s detention for 45 days, despite the release of most other detainees in the same case. This raised concerns about the prolonged pretrial detention in such cases.

Mohamadeen was arrested on July 12, 2024, at his home over calls he made for protests on July 12, 2023, as well as for sharing videos in support of Gaza and several posts discussing the economic situation.

The student was held in undisclosed locations without legal justification before being presented to the Supreme State Security Prosecution on July 16, 2024. He faced charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes, spreading false news and statements that could harm public security and order, and using a social media account to disseminate such information. He was confronted with his mobile phone and several of his Facebook posts.
