The Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the pretrial detention of Abdullah Omar, a student at Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Agriculture, for 15 days pending investigations in Case No. 4488 of 2026 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested Omar from his home on 18 May 2026. He remained detained without a legal basis for nearly four months. According to the investigation records, his arrest appears to have been linked to his membership in a group on the Discord platform, despite his lack of interaction with the group’s content. He attributed his decision to join the group to curiosity and a desire to explore.

Omar faces charges of joining a terrorist group while knowing its purposes, committing one of the crimes of financing a terrorist group, disseminating false news and statements that could undermine security and public order, and using an account on international information networks to publish and disseminate false news and statements that could undermine security and public order.
