Visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani released under guarantee of his place of residence

On January 16, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to release visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani, under the guarantee of his place of residence, in connection with case No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security Prosecution). 

Abdel Ghani faced charges of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and information. Against the backdrop of several posts that Abdel Ghani shared on Facebook dated several years ago about price hikes. 

3 January 2023 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days against charges of spreading false news” 

On January 3. The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days in connection with Case No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested Abdel Ghani from his house on September 10, and the prosecution confronted him with nine posts from his Facebook profile dated a few years. as a result, he was charged with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and information.

Amir Abdel Ghani is a visual artist and member of the Plastic Artists Syndicate. A Faculty of Art Education graduate, he has many contributions and art exhibitions in Egypt. He participated in the 28th and 29th rounds of the Youth Salon, which the Egyptian Ministry of Culture organizes. He also won the Luxor International Photography Symposium Award in 2017. He participated in the “Day 2” Festival in 2018. He also volunteered in the “From being neglected to being precious” exhibition and many art workshops, including the Uskun Contemporary Art Workshop.

20 December 2022

On December 20, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the pretrial detention of visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days in connection with Case No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

The prosecution confronted Abdel Ghani with nine posts from his Facebook profile dated a few years back regarding prices hikes, Abdel Ghani’s father stated that security forces stormed his house and arrested Abdel Ghani in an unknown location; nine days later, he appeared before the Prosecution which charged him with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and informations.

6 December 2022

On December 6, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days in connection with Case No. 1635 of 2022 (Supreme State Security).

Security forces arrested Abdel Ghani, the member of the visual artist’s syndicate, on September 10, the forces detained him in an unknown place till he appeared before the prosecution, which interrogated him regarding Facebook posts dating back to the years 2015 to 2020, about the high cost of drawing tools. 

The investigations authorities charged him with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and informations.

11 October 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days for “spreading false news”” 

On October 11, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of visual artist and member of the visual artist’s syndicate, Amir Abdel Ghani, for 15 days in connection with Case No. 1635 of 2022 Supreme State Security.

 

Abdel Ghani was arrested on September 10, and security forces who arrested him led him to an unknown location to his family and lawyers for 9 days till he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which in turn, charged him with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and statements.

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) submitted a request on October 5 to the Attorney General Hamada Al-Sawy which held No. 46571 of 2022 (Attorney General’s petitions) to release Abdel Ghani; as he had never participated in any political activity, His family also addressed all members of the Presidential Pardon Committee.

5 October 2022 

The defense team of the visual artist, Amir Abdel Ghani, submitted a request for release to the Public Prosecutor, No. 46571 of 2022, the petitions of the Technical Office of the Public Prosecutor. They also sent a copy of the request to all members of the Presidential Pardon Committee.

27 September 2022 “Supreme State Security Prosecution renews the detention of visual artist Amir Abdel Ghani for 15 days” 

On September 27, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of visual artist and member of the visual artist’s syndicate, Amir Abdel Ghani, for 15 days in connection with Case No. 1635 of 2022 Supreme State Security.

Security forces arrested Amir Abdel Ghani on September 10; he was subjected to enforced disappearance in a location unknown to his family and lawyers till he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on September 19, which decided to include him in the case mentioned above and to detain him for 15 days. 

After the interrogations, the Supreme State Security Prosecution charged Abdel Ghani with joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its aims, spreading false news and statements that would harm public peace and order, and using a social media account to spread false news and statements.
