The Warraq Misdemeanor Appellate Court (Terrorism Circuit), on February 24, issued a verdict acquitting Mohamed Mostafa Mohamed Mostafa in connection with lawsuit No. 11095 of 2016 (Agouza Misdemeanors), known in the media as the Tiran and Sanafir lawsuit.
Mostafa was arrested in April 2016 during a demonstration opposing Egypt’s decision to relinquish sovereignty over the islands of Tiran and Sanafir, the very demonstrations referred to as the Land Protests. He was subsequently released from custody in that case after facing charges of protesting without a permit. At the time, he was sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds. Following his appeal against that judgment, the court has now acquitted him of all charges.
